5 car dealer email templates that get a lower price
Negotiating in writing beats negotiating in a showroom: you get comparable quotes, a paper trail, and no pressure. These are the five emails that do almost all of the work.
1. First contact — request an out-the-door quote
Subject: Out-the-door price on stock #12345 Hi, I'm interested in the 2021 Honda Accord EX-L, stock #12345, listed at $23,995. Could you send the full out-the-door price, itemized with doc fee, title, registration, and tax? I'm ready to buy this week and I'm requesting the same quote from two other dealers in the area. Thanks, [Name] — [phone]
2. Counter-offer once you have the number
Subject: Re: Out-the-door price on stock #12345 Thanks for the quote. Comparable 2021 Accord EX-L listings within 200 miles are averaging $22,400, and this car has above-average mileage. I can sign today at $23,000 out the door, financing through my own credit union. If that works, send the buyer's order and I'll come in. [Name]
3. Leverage a competing written quote
Subject: Competing quote on a comparable car I have a written out-the-door quote of $22,750 from another dealer on a similar 2021 Accord EX-L. I'd rather buy from you. Can you beat that number? If yes, reply with the itemized figure and I'll come in today. [Name]
4. Refuse add-ons without killing the deal
Subject: Buyer's order — add-ons The buyer's order shows $399 VIN etching and $599 paint protection. I'm not purchasing either. Please send a revised order without them, or reduce the vehicle price by the same amount. Everything else looks good and I'm ready to sign. [Name]
5. The polite walk-away (often gets a callback)
Subject: Thanks anyway I appreciate your time, but the out-the-door number doesn't work for me and I've found a closer match elsewhere. If anything changes on price before the end of the month, my number is [phone]. [Name]
Send all five to three dealers, not one
The templates only work because several dealerships are answering them at the same time. Three internet sales managers competing for the same buyer is worth more than any single clever line.
