Out-the-door price: how to calculate it and ask for it
The advertised price of a car is marketing. The out-the-door (OTD) price is the only number that can't be reshaped by a longer loan term or a fee moved to another line.
What's in an out-the-door price
| Line item | What it is | Leverage |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle price | The negotiated price of the car itself. | Negotiable |
| Documentation fee | Dealer paperwork charge, $100-$999 depending on state law. | Sometimes capped, usually offset |
| Sales tax | State and local tax on the vehicle price. | Fixed |
| Title and registration | State DMV charges. | Fixed |
| Dealer prep / recon | Cleaning and reconditioning. | Negotiable |
| Add-ons | VIN etching, nitrogen, paint protection, GAP. | Refusable |
A quick estimate before you email anyone
Take the listed price, add your local sales tax rate, add roughly $500 for doc fee and about $300 for title and registration. On a $20,000 car in a 7% tax state that's about $22,200. If a dealer's quote is far above your estimate, the gap is fees and add-ons — and that gap is where the negotiation happens.
Ask for it in writing, every time
Request an itemized OTD quote by email from the internet sales manager, with the stock number in the subject line. Quotes given verbally on the lot change by the time you reach the finance office; emailed quotes rarely do.
Frequently asked questions
- What does out-the-door price mean?
- The out-the-door price is the total amount you pay to drive the car away: vehicle price plus documentation fee, title, registration, and sales tax, minus any down payment or trade-in credit.
- How much higher is the out-the-door price than the sticker price?
- Typically 8-12% higher than the advertised price once taxes and fees are added, though it varies widely by state because sales tax and doc fee caps differ.
- How do I ask a dealer for the out-the-door price?
- Email the internet sales manager with the stock number and ask for an itemized out-the-door quote listing every fee and tax. Ask in writing so you can compare dealers line by line.
